Phytoleum:

Phyto – plant based

Oleum – oil

Phytoleum is a terpene product produced from biomass and  used as a feedstock for various chemical industries. The Phytoleum process is a method of extracting and purifying terpenes from biomass. When using pine biomass it is a source for traditional pine chemicals such as pinene. Years have been invested researching, developing and refining the processes and production of oil from woody biomass under patent applications filed in the United States, Canada and Australia. See US9139789B2 and US9873844B2.

This process provides a viable, valuable and renewable commodity.

Solvent Extraction

  • Utilizes a novel adaptation of existing solvent extraction technology
  • Removes the majority of the VOCs and extractives from the incoming wood chips prior to pulping/pelletizing
  • All solvents are recycled in an essentially loss-less closed loop system
  • Innovative solvent process simultaneously dehydrates biomass as terpenes are removed

Downstream Benefits

  • Biomass drying costs reduced
  • Mitigation effect on the overall effluent treatment by lessening the amount and types of contaminants in thealpha-pineneeffluent stream

Additional Revenue Source

  • Efficient recovery of material otherwise lost as VOCs
  • Provides an additional revenue stream for the biomass operation.
  • More value from existing operations
  • Does not consume any cellulose, hemicellulose, or lignin
